There is a simpler way to run the soap shelf. Pick a national brand, set up a standing order, and never think about it again. It would always be in stock, always the same, always a little cheaper than what we carry now.
We do it the harder way, and the reason is not sentiment.
You can ask the maker a question
When someone comes in with skin that reacts to everything, the useful answer is not on a label. It is “the unscented bar has five ingredients and here is what each one is for”, and we can say that because the person who made it told us, and will tell us again if we ring. A distribution centre cannot do that.
Small batches change with the season
The bars on the shelf in summer are not the bars on the shelf in winter, and that is a feature. Cold-process soap is cured for weeks, so what you buy this month was made last month, from whatever the maker had. Regulars know to ask what is new. It makes the shelf worth walking past.
The money stays nearby
This is the obvious one, so we will keep it short: a bar bought here pays a person who lives here. If you make something by hand and think it belongs on the shelf, write to us. We do not take everything, but we look at everything.
